About Us

Newtonhill Pipe Band is a recreational pipe band. We are a voluntary charitable organisation whose aim is to disseminate the knowledge and enjoyment of pipes and pipe bands to the wider community and to teach both piping and drumming.

Originally named Craigmarroinn Pipe Band, practicing in Muchalls the band changed its name when we moved our practices to Newtonhill. During the 20+ years the band has been in existence, more than 250 players have been taught drums and pipes, and many have gone on to sit SQA and Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association exams.

We are a community focussed band and we play at many community events across the north east of Scotland, and further afield every year.

Structure of the Band

The band has 2 corps of players – pipers and drummers. The Pipe Major is responsible for all aspects of the band relating to playing.

The band also has a committee which is responsible for the overall management of the band, including its financial management.

The committee consists of:

  • 6 Office Bearers – Convenor, Secretary, Treasurer, Event Co-ordinator, Quartermaster, Safeguarding Officer

  • 1 player member each from the pipe and drum corps

  • 1 junior player member

  • 2 ex-officio members – Pipe Major and Drum Major

  • Up to a further 4 members elected at the band’s AGM

The committee meets a minimum of 9 times during the year. Minutes are sent to all band members following the committee meeting at which they are approved.

The band’s Annual General Meeting is normally held during November or December each year. Committee members and Office Bearers are elected at the AGM for the following year.

As a registered Scottish charity, the band is regulated by the Scottish Charities Regulator (OSCR).

Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association (RSPBA)

The band is a member of the RSPBA, a governing body which exists to oversee pipe band competition and to promote and encourage the development of pipe band culture throughout the world. We are currently registered at grade 4B level. We register individuals with the RSPBA when they reach the required playing skills and experience to play with the band.
